The Gallipoli 100 Team
| |
|
The Gallipoli 100 Organisation is composed of a group of passionate surfers who also share an interest in military history and have experience in managing surfing events and overseas tours.
The initial team is made up of Paul Murphy's company, Military History Tours, all information on it is at the website at
www.militaryhistorytours.com.au. Representing the G100, Paul visited Turkey in February 2009, and found nothing but enthusiasm for the G100 concept. The other side of our team is Dr Paul Cooper, boat captain at Tamarama SLSC in Sydney who together with Mark Walton, ex Duntroon Graduate and recently retired from full time army service, and also a Tamarama boatie, came up with the G100 concept.
As a team, we have combined active surf club members with Australia’s leading Military History tour
company.

Mark Walton
I was a late baby boomer and enjoyed the latter part of the 50’s (oh, and all the 60’s and the first part of the 70’s) in the south western parts of Sydney on a farm in what was then a very rural Campbelltown.
Spent Nipper days at North Curl Curl and when we found that the south coast beaches were cleaner, at Thirroul and
Austinmer
Believing that a military life was a ‘good thing’ I applied for and was selected for Army training at the Royal Military College in 1974. What followed was 30 years of serious stuff and a whole lot of fun.
During those 30 years there were lots of moves all over the country but I was in most cases able to hook up with a surf club to maintain my love of wood on water (the boats were wood then) and can count Cairns, Eddy Bay, Magnetic Island, Gove (for a one-off stint), Broadbeach in that mix. The Army sent me to Sydney where I joined
Queenscliff before being ‘persuaded’ to take up a boatie position with Tamarama – Aussies, 2009 marked a 20 year association as a Boatie with them .
I live with Marcia, (and my mum kinda lives next door) in the Blue Mountains where I can enjoy my other passion of ropes and rock, but the call of early morning surf training has never gone un-answered.
It was being in the military and being a boatie that made me passionate about the 2015 Anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign – I could not see any other more appropriate means of representing the long association of surf and soldiering than by having Australian Surf Boats, which look so similar in profile to the original landing boats, holding silent position in 2015 on that Peninsular. Couldn’t get the Government to make it happen so through the Gallipoli 100 we are working like mad to make it happen
